If you are installing the SQL server that comes with vCenter, then no you don’t need to do anything, vCenter will take care of that (please note that this is meant for small environments, probably less than 100VM) If you are installing yourself a complete SQL installation on the same vCenter server, then yes you still need to do the DSN setup. I’m not quite sure what is your error related to, but I believe I’ve seen some issues related to the SQL2008 with the vCenter 4.0. It’s supported though as I see from this link :
