Hi Hany,

Many thanks for your effort in creating this excellent video - I had a query about the dsn sequence while I was installing and your video answered the question straight away.

Many thanks and keep up the excellent work. Execellent wallpaper too as has been commented by previous viewers.

Best Wishes

Hi Azam,

Thanks for your comment. If you are installing the SQL server that comes with vCenter, then no you don’t need to do anything, vCenter will take care of that (please note that this is meant for small environments, probably less than 100VM)

If you are installing yourself a complete SQL installation on the same vCenter server, then yes you still need to do the DSN setup.

Hope this helps.

Hey Michael,

First: Thank you very much for the great video thanks to this I have a better idea on how I will proceed with my vsphere4 environment. Additionally the mp3 music is great for it! normally some videos do not have such a cool music hahaha.

Second: I will be doing the installation on a windows 2003 ent. sp2 64bit and the database I will be installing is the M$SQL 2005 ent. 64bit. What components should I install to get the vsphere4 working properly

I am at the setup installation screen with the check mark squares options and I need to select the services I want to install =>
-sql server database services
-analisys services
-reporting services
-notification services
-integration services
-workstation components, books online and development tools.

Do I need all of them for vcenter vsphere4?

Third: Since this is a fresh install, should I name the instance (for easy identification) or should I click default?

Fourth: I am recording the whole installation process using camtasia software, so I would like to publish a video where people can the process of installing the MS SQL server 2005 in this case. You basically have the most important part in your video but the installation of the MS SQL I think is important as well. Otherwise people will run into all kind of errors in the future. Again I am setting up vcenter vsphere4 with the database in a different server using a full version of MS SQL server 2005 64bit.

For now these are all my questions after I finish the installation I may have some other questions and suggestions. Again great work and I am willing to do things similar so others can benefit from it like I am benefiting from your video.

Thank you again and hope to see you publishing other videos.

Sincerely,

Thanks Jai for your kind words. I use Camtasia Studio for the video recording/editing, and Adobe PhotoShop for the graphics/artwork. You just need to practice and that’s all. Over the time I’m pretty sure that I’ll be able to make better videos than these ones. You may want to check the tutorials at Camtasia’s website to get you up to speed with it: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/camtasia/getting-started/default.asp

As per the wallpaper, I completely forgot about it, but I’ll try to make the hi-resolution version this weekend and send it over to you & Jose at the first comment.

Hi gegbt,

Thanks for the comment on the video :)
I’m not quite sure what is your error related to, but I believe I’ve seen some issues related to the SQL2008 with the vCenter 4.0. It’s supported though as I see from this link :
http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf

You may want to open a support request with VMware for faster and accurate troubleshooting for this issue ..

Thanks

Really nice videos as well, I would like a copy of them as well. However I have a question, I am attemtping to install vSphere and running into an issue where I getting this error message Setup failed to the connect to the database" I have created the DB & User Account, check the ODBC Setting which test fine on connection, able to telnet to the SQL from the VC on port 1433, Connect to the DB with the user id I created both (SQL & Domain Accounts). Work with VMware and they are not able to resolve this issue. Note we are using Windows 08 & SQL 08 on the Database server & Windows 2003 on the VC with the SQL Native Client 10. I have also ran the tracer setting with the ODBC and saw I was failing with the following "Select * From vclogin.vpx_version;" Diag 52S02 Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver, SQL Server "Invalid object Name 'vclogin.vpx_version' (208).

Please help if possible!
