Yikes! Double thin provisioning like that is a really bad idea in my opinion. You really have to be careful to watch *actual* disk overcommit amounts in two places so you understand what you've committed to vs. what you have. This is like using a credit card to secure multiple loans. My advice is to pick one place to manage thin provisioning and stick with that.

Hany,
Great write up. I attended the last local VMUG where I live, I was very surprised by the amount of people that had not upgraded to vSphere yet. Lot's of great functionality in this current release!
Scott

thanks Simon - I’ve never thought about doing the thin-provisioning on both vSphere and the array in the same time, sounds like a bit of an over-kill for my environment, but it’s interesting to test it in the lab!

Great post and great diagram as usual... We will have more and more of those upgrades and moves. In your case you moved from HP to EMC and at the same time upgraded from vCenter2.5 to 4.0 and as you said without a single second downtime awesome!

Great write up Hany! With regards to Thin-Provisioning the VM or doing it at the Storage array, there is nothing stopping you doing it at both. Where I work we Thin-Provision the LUN's and then Thin-Provision the VMDK's too, works REALLY well.

Simon
